1/5

Congratulations, if you are reading this page of our website you have probably successfully completed the USMLE Steps 1 & 2. That is a great achievement. However, as a foreign medical graduate you must also complete the USMLE step 3 before some programs look at your application. You should check this out thoroughly; depending on your specific status and program you may or may not need to do the Step 3 prior to submitting your application. Regardless, at some point you will have to complete this exam so you might as well read on to learn how to prepare for it.

The step 3 is a two day exam that is composed of two different testing modules. The first module is the familiar question sets as seen on the previous two steps; it is administered during the first day. The second module is composed of case simulations and is based on a computerized system that simulates a true life patient encounter. During this encounter you manage a virtual patient that responds to your actions by either showing clinical improvement or decline. The second module is administered during part of the second day (the first portion of this day is question sets).

When studying for the step 3 it is sometimes difficult to prepare as you did for steps 1 and 2. Many people work as doctors or are during the clinical phases of their education and have less dedicated study time. Therefore you should make your life easy and simply buy a subscription for USMLE World. They have both a question bank and excellent fully functional simulation software that will give you excellent preparation for the exam. If you need a written supplement to follow along with the question bank, I recommend "First Aid for the USMLE Step 3". Finally, do not forget to download the free software from the USMLE 3 website. This software includes questions and fully functional case simulations; this is a "must do" prior to the exam in order to familiarize yourself with the exam software - failure to do this may result in failure on the day of the exam!

That's all folks…
